Des Moines, capital of Iowa and an agricultural hub for the nation, has a notable line-up of new or updated attractions. Opened in 2005, Well Fargo Arena hosts AHL Iowa Stars hockey. The Science Center of Iowa, also opened 2005, has an IMAX Dome Theater and a walk-through planetarium. Set to open in spring, 2006, the Des Moines Public Library in the heart of downtown features an all glass roof, allowing patrons to read while taking in the Des Moines skyline. Along the banks of the Des Moines River and with two pedestrian bridges, the Principal Riverwalk is a 1.2 mile lighted, landscaped multi-purpose trail set for completion in 2007. The Iowa State Fair in August ranks as a marquee attraction for the entire region, with its 400-acre State Fairgrounds open year-round hosting hundreds of events, and the Iowa State Fair Campgrounds offers 1,900 sites with water and hookups. Des Moines events range from the Asian Heritage Festival, Greek Food Fair, and Fest Italiana to Winefest Des Moines, the Taste of Des Moines, and the Well Fargo World Food Festival. What’s known as Metro Des Moines -- Dallas, Polk, Warren, Madison and Guthrie counties -- had a population of 511,153 as of 2005, while all of central Iowa posted a resident count of about 715,000. Even so, eight colleges and universities in the metro area boast a total student enrollment well above 50,000. Accommodations include both family owned and chain motels and hotels.
